The Remodeling of the Retail Sector of South-East Europe, Sarajevo, May 2004The Remodeling of the Retail Sector of South-East Europe, Sarajevo, May 2004

A regional workshop on Agriculture, Agri-Business and the Retail Sector in South-East Europe, sponsored by the Central European Initiative (CEI), FAO and the World Bank's Agriculture and the Rural Development Department (ARD) was conducted in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina during May 24-27 2004. The workshop explored the expanding role played by supermarkets in the marketing of agricultural products in the transitional central and eastern European economies (CEEC). As countries change from centrally planned economies to open market economies, the traditional retailing of agricultural products through street markets and shops has been increasingly taken over by supermarkets; initially through locally owned mini-markets, but later, and surprisingly rapidly, by international supermarket chains. In many transition countries, between 40% and 60% of all agricultural produce and food products may be sold through large supermarket chains within a period of 5 to 10 years after the opening of the economy. Keynote speakers to the workshop explored the impact of trade liberalization, the impact of the evolution of supermarkets and supply chains in the CEEC and the importance of effective sanitary and phytosanitary control and food safety.
