The agricultural industry is a major user of natural resources such as land and water and a key source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including non-energy sources from livestock and land use. To reduce emissions and enhance resource efficiency, the FAO and the EBRD have recently expanded their collaborative portfolio on topics related to the “greening” of agri-food chains, from primary to processing stages of production.
Project: FAO and EBRD are collaborating on a joint project titled “Monitoring the adoption of key sustainable climate technologies in the agri-food sector”
Duration: from October 2014 until March 2016.
Funding: The project is designed in the framework of the Finance and Technology Transfer Centre for Climate Change (FINTECC). It was funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the EBRD Shareholder Special Fund (SSF)
Aim: demonstrating the viability of both climate mitigation and climate adaptation and resilience technologies
Targeted Countries: both SEMED (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia) and ETC (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan,Turkey and Ukraine) countries , including a programme to help businesses implement innovative climate technologies (mostly through technical assistance and incentive grants for eligible technologies).
This FAO-EBRD project aims at developing methodological guidance for assessment and monitoring of climate technology market penetration, covering a broad scope of industries and technologies.
The monitoring of technology market penetration is intended to:
(i) inform policy dialogue activities;
(ii) provide key information for public, private sector and financing institutions to support investment decisions; and
(iii) increase knowledge on climate technology supply chain development.
Partners: The project is been implemented in close cooperation with the International Energy Agency (IEA), focusing primarily on the market penetration of energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) technologies in a broad range of industry sectors.
Outcome: A key outcome has consisted in the development of a methodology study for assessment and monitoring of climate technology market penetration. The methodology is built around the four main analytical steps, which are shown in the figure below.
Building on the results of the first phase of the project (pilot study in Morocco), EBRD has requested FAO to pilot-test the methodology in additional two to three countries during the course of 2016. This ‘Phase II’ project is under preparation.
