Ukraine: Training of grain farmersUkraine: Training of grain farmers

Ukraine enjoys a major role as a global grain producer and exporter and still has a considerable potential for growth. By 2020, wheat exports from the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Ukraine are estimated to be approximately double to that of the United States. However, Ukraine has not been able to fully realize its production potential due to a number of constraints, with financing being only one of them. Increased production and export of grains would constitute a source of additional export revenues, but farmers in Ukraine lack knowledge about technologies that could improve agricultural productivity. With the support of EBRD clients in Ukraine, such as NCH Advisors (NCH) and the Soufflet Group, FAO and EBRD joined forces to develop a two-year training program for grain farmers. The training targets at least 170 farm managers, agronomists and agricultural engineers of mid-sized farms that operate between 500 hectares and 10 000 hectares of arable land. It seeks to further the participants’ understanding in some primary focus areas, including the new varieties of wheat, soil management, crop rotation and sustainable farming. The program consists of six training modules: three modules for agronomists farms, one for managers, engineers and machine operators, and one training module, a field visit to the most successful farms of the region.
