Quality for Competitiveness of meat products from Montenegro, April 2015Quality for Competitiveness of meat products from Montenegro, April 2015

The FAO, the EBRD and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Montenegro held a conference in Podgorica on April 21st on “Quality for Competitiveness of meat products". The conference aimed to provide background information on the Montenegrin meat sector, share experience with neighboring countries and raise awareness on the sector’s opportunities and challenges. It was also an occasion to launch the joint FAO/EBRD project “Upgrading Montenegrin meat quality standards and exchanging lessons learned in the Western Balkan”, and present the development of an inventory of traditional products that could potentially be protected by geographical indication status. For Montenegrin meat producers, compliance with higher safety and quality standards is increasingly important if they want to remain competitive and the meat sector in Montenegro presents an important potential for GI products with a series of traditional products coming from specific parts of the territory with high quality recognition. The event brought together over 100 participants, including representatives of the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro, and executives of producing and processing companies, leading experts and public-private stakeholders. The roundtables offered a platform for discussions amongst producers from the region including two of the largest meat processing companies in Montenegro, Goranovic and Mesopromet, as well as FAO/EBRD project partners from neighboring countries such as Carnex and Agrokor –on food safety and quality requirements. Participants discussed ways to identify, develop and promote traditional quality products, the role of smallholders and the importance of flexibility provisions, as well as policies and food safety and quality standards in the region.
